Unicode Fonts for Syriac

For those with MS Windows operating systems, you can download a suitable Unicode font and install it. A list of available fonts can be found here (right-click on link to open in new window):
Syriac Unicode Fonts - listed by WAZU Japan.

Linux users will have a slightly different method of installing the fonts. Any Unicode font will display a default Syriac script. For best results however, we recommend using the following (free) fonts. Once installed, these fonts should automatically be displayed by your browser. We have tested this for Firefox 3.x browsers and assume other similar browsers will work fine.

Fonts: Examples and Test Page

You can use the chart below to test Syriac Font installation. Each sample text should look slightly different if all fonts are installed. If they are all the same (and bland) you are probably viewing a default Unicode style from your Operating System font (e.g. Arial, or Times New Roman etc.).

The font for our text in the following pages has been set up in the default order of the font samples highlighted in RED on this page. So if you prefer a specific font, only install the font you want. With all fonts installed, you should see Estranglo Midyat (the top font example).

The Meltho collection of Syriac OpenType fonts originally part of the XFree86 distribution, but which are licensed under terms incompatible with the Debian Free Software Guidelines, and thus cannot be distributed as part of Debian. They must be downloaded and installed by the user. We installed these fonts on our Ubuntu Linux system, by simply using the Synaptic Packages Manager, searching for "font" and finding the Meltho package and installing it.
