INTRODUCTION

Background

We find out the history of Scholz' Greek text from the following publication:

American Greek Testaments
A critical bibliography of the Greek NT
as published in America; (1883)
by Hall, Isaac Hollister, 1837-1896.

The Critical Greek-English NT of Bagster (text of Scholz, with various readings from Griesbach, Stephens 1550, Beza 1598, Elzevir 1633), 16mo, pp [vi.] 624, has appeared with the imprint of Wiley NY in 1859, 1868, 1877, 1880, 1882, 1883, and perhaps other dates, besides the many issues without date.

...

This edition has the merit of accurately reproducing the text of Scholz; a quality which is sometimes wrongly attributed to the Bloomfield editions. A greater merit, however, consists in its various readings; though its popularity is chiefly due to its clear print, its convenient form, and its bilingual character.

The original Scholz was published at Leipzig, by Fleischer, in two large quarto vols. dated 1830 and 1836, respectively. The editor, Dr. Johann Martin Augustin Scholz, was a theological professor in the Catholic university at Bonn, and was an indefatigable and successful collector of critical material. But his text has little merit, nor has it ever met with favor at the hands of critical scholars, except in Protestant England during a period of great blindness and pietistic prejudice.

The critical notes of Scholz generally appropriate Griesbach outright when there is opportunity; once (see note on 1st Tim. 3:16) in such a manner as inadvertently to claim the authorship of Griesbach's Symboae Criticae. And he is notoriously careless and inaccurate.
